ICELAND

Description

Awe-inspiring land of the Norseman, Iceland lies between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It is the most sparsely populated country in Europe and is highly volcanic and geologically active. The interior is a plateau of sand and lava fields, dramatic landscapes of volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, boiling mud pools, sulphur deposits, waterfalls, lakes, mountains and glaciers from which rivers flow through the lowlands to the fjords and the sea. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream with a temperate climate despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Historically the island is linked with Norway and Denmark who ruled the country until independence in the early 20th century.
