Description
At a time when the Islamic community and its relationship with the West is at the forefront of global concerns, a simple article of female clothing is representative of the divide between two opposing cultures and two very different ways of life. In the West, many view the Niqab and Burqa as a symbol and instrument of oppression against women and wearing this clothing in public was banned in France and Belgium in 2011. In many Islamic communities, dressing in a Niqab or Burqa outside the privacy of the home and family is considered to be an emancipation and liberation for women. This series of images explores these different perceptions of identity, individuality and personal freedom.
